Today is the summer solstice.
The Paris Annual Summer Solstice Music Festival is about to begin.
Young people from all over are flocking to Paris, going to have a weekend of non-stop music, dancing, and drinking.
I chose to leave before this mess happened, catching the earliest train going to Germany.
I eventually watched the sunrise when I left home around 5 a.m., and I also expect to see a sunset tonight. A complete experience of the longest day of the year.
Summer solstice, summer has truly arrived.
Yesterday’s forecast was 36 degrees Celsius, but walking on the street, I felt it was much hotter under the sun; even in the shade, the heat was intense.
You need to know one thing about Paris, there’s no air conditioning in the subway.
My friends in CJK probably can’t imagine a train carriage nearly 40 degrees Celsius without air conditioning. If it’s 36 degrees outside, it’s probably another 5 degrees inside, conservatively speaking. It’s like being slowly simmered at a low temperature *imaging yourself a fish.
I got on the train at station M and it was barely okay, but by station D, the train was almost full. Sweat streamed down my face.
My mind was like: why did I even go out? Why didn’t I skip the meet and just say sorry to friends?
At P Station, the doors opened, and two Indians came in. They checked the temperature for three seconds, then turned and left, directly. One of them even said, “It’s so hot!” I nodded. He then asked me, “Are you Japanese?” and gave me an admiring look as the doors closed. I didn’t explain, keeping my face calm.
Perhaps today will start the legend that Japanese people are more heat-resistant than Indians.
My friend in Wuhan enjoying her air conditioning, said, “If the subway didn’t have air conditioning, wouldn’t people smelly?”
I said, “Everything is secondary to life and death. Yesterday, someone fainted and had to be taken away by ambulance. BUT I survived.”
The French refuse to install air conditioning is really a headache.
Our building can’t have an outdoor air conditioning unit.
So I just ordered a portable/mobile air conditioner.
Surviving is the most important thing.
Happy Summer Solstice everyone.
I’m going to escape the heat, for now.
